Shine Bright Like a Diamond Foundation

One gala a year. Every dollar to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Nuno Rocha and his wife at the Shine Bright Masquerade Ball

Why I started this

Cancer came to my family twice. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my dad with prostate cancer. If you’ve been through it with someone you love, you know the feeling: the waiting rooms, the test results, the long stretches where all you can do is show up.

I couldn’t change what was happening to them. What I could do was put the one thing I’m good at, bringing people together around something beautiful, to work for the people fighting this disease.

That’s how the Shine Bright Like a Diamond Foundation began. It’s a registered charitable foundation, and it exists for a single purpose: to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, one night a year, with friends, clients and our community in the room.

It isn’t a marketing program and it isn’t attached to anything you buy from me. It’s just my family’s way of doing our part.

— Nuno

What we do

Each year the foundation hosts a gala just north of Toronto. Tickets, tables, sponsorships and a draw for a full Diamondboi set are how the money is raised, and the net proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society to fund research, support programs and advocacy for people living with cancer across Canada.

Over our first two galas, we’ve raised close to $70,000. This February is our third.
